Exciting Custom Printed Shirts!

The technique of screen printing, or serigraphy, dates back to the Song Dynasty during the first century AD. In its most basic form, screen printing is achieved by transferring a stenciled image to woven material via an ink block. While the screen printing technique did spread across other parts of Asia, Europeans did not learn of it until the late 1700s.

Over the next couple of centuries, screen printers attempted to improve the screen printing process by experimenting with different materials and chemicals like chromate, diochromate, potassium, sodium, gelatin compounds, and various glues. In the 1930s, a group of screen print designers came together to form a group called the National Serigraphic Society. It is from the name of this group that the word “serigraphy” was coined.

The process of creating custom design t-shirts usually involves a basic cotton t-shirt, screen printing ink, and a “flat bed” screen press. Cotton is the material of choice because it stands up to repeated washing and holds ink well. The application of an image occurs when a rubber blade called a “squeegee” pumps ink through the fabric via capillary action. The result is an exact reproduction of a stenciled image. This same process can also be applied to thicker cotton material, such as the fabric used to create customized hoodies, sweatshirts, and sweatpants. Screen printed t-shirts, sweatshirts, and hoodies are perhaps the most popular types of casual clothing today, particularly among youth. While customized sweatshirts and customized hoodies are not worn by every kid, it is easy and cheap to order or create and design custom t-shirts online

Custom Printed T-Shirts on a Budget

Often we find that many design custom t-shirts only to find that it won’t be cost effective for their budget. Here are a few tips that will help you make your own t shirt in the most cost effective manner possible.

Tip #1. Order your custom tee shirts in large volumes when possible. Printing custom t-shirts is like printing business cards, newspapers, or any variety of items, the cost is in the set up. As such, the higher the quantity of custom apparel ordered the lower the cost per unit becomes.

Tip #2. Look for a cotton mix product vs 100% cotton. The product chosen plays a factor in the price of custom apparel. Name brands, type of fabric and specialty items will drive the price up. Changing a product from a 100% cotton ringer tee to a50-50 white tee will dramatically bring the cost down.

Tip #3. Be flexible on the colors of your custom tee shirts. Color of your custom t shirt also enters into the mix. Because color shirts require extra steps in the printing process you will find that it is less expensive to print custom t-shirts on white rather than color.

Tip #4. Be aware, the more elaborate and more locations of the t-shirt design, the higher the cost. When you make your own t shirt, your t-shirt design plays a big factor in the cost. How many colors and where you want it printed will determine how much you pay. Basically, the more colors and the more areas you print, on your custom t shirt the higher the cost. When you make your own t shirt the best rule of thumb for a cost effective custom t shirt is, one color and one side.

Tip #5. Stick with sizes less than XL Lastly, size plays a factor. You will find that custom tee shirts sizes above XL cost a bit more. Unfortunately the only thing one can do to change that is hit the gym!

Have a great day and remember when you make your own t shirt, Price = Quantity + Product + Color + Design + Size.

Custom T-shirts Catching Illegal Immigrants?

This custom printed t-shirt has taken over social media in the past few days!  A Mexican themed restaurant is marketing their business with a  t-shirt that shows two tacos used as bait to trap illegal immigrants.  Some are calling the Mexican restaurant raciest.  The business owner says “It’s not raciest, it’s immigrants, it’s a t-shirt“.  But creating controversy makes money.  The business owner is selling the shirts nation wide now at THIRTY FIVE DOLLARS each!  I wonder what is making her more money, the T-shirts, or the unauthentic Mexican food.  In my mind, selling tacos, decorating your restaurant with sombreros, and promoting with such a t-shirt sends a very confusing message.

How To Make a Cool Shoulder Bag From An Old Custom T-Shirt

My latest obsession is YouTube! I LOVE IT!  Ever since I got an Apple TV and can stream from my phone directly to the big screen I’ve gained ten pounds and have started an endless number of art projects.  I love being able to learn about anything at anytime and living voyeuristically through others.  Last night while I was “Tubing” I came across this cute lil girl  with a fun taste in music and  a brilliant idea for a t-shirt craft.  She turned an old custom t-shirt into what she calls a Pochette.  After she amazed me with that she took it up a notch and used some of the left over t-shirt fabric to make a flower embellishment for her t-shirt bag.  She tops it off by braiding some twine looking material to make a shoulder strap for the bag she constructed from an old custom printed t-shirt.  My favorite thing about this is the green aspect!  Nothing better than when someone can take an otherwise useless piece and turn it into something usable.  Go grab your favorite old screen printed t-shirt and get to stitching!

Most Expensive T-Shirt EVER!!!!

Andy Murray

Andy Murray fell into our radar this week when his t-shirt sold for $13,500.  Murray ended Great Britain’s 76 year dry spell by winning the US Open in September thus bringing such a high price tag for his autographed, and hopefully freshly laundered t-shirt.  What the person who purchased this shirt probably didn’t know is that he could have got an additional 4200 custom t-shirts at TheShirtPrinter.com for the same price!  And, we won’t even scribble our names on them, unless of course that is what our customer desires on their custom printed t-shirt.
